I tend to be stuck in the planning stage and get overwhelmed with all the things that could go wrong. Having graduated in Business Management (years ago, omg I’m old) I am used to doing my calculations, creating financial statements and my break even analysis to make decisions; it scares me to see the numbers. I have to admit it was part of what was holding me back to officially start my own Photography business in a world where everyone has access to nice cameras, and you have probably read all the negativity about it online. I chose to seek encouragement from communities and friends that are willing to help and provide guidance. I am fully aware of the risks and yet here I am, daring to start. It was a long process. I wanted to guarantee that I will love doing it as a business and I can make it grow.
We can’t get stuck in just planning though, in my case it has been years, we won’t really know the outcome unless we take action.
I just want to share a quote from Marie Forleo that has helped me; hopefully it will help others who are struggling to figure out what it is they want to do with their lives, whether it be a business, hobby or choosing what program to take in school.
Clarity Comes From Engagement, Not Thought.
You can't keep thinking about it. Do your numbers make a plan and take action. This goes for your hobbies and whatever you are thinking of doing next. Success is not guaranteed and I'm sure many of you like me, do have mortgages and a family to take care of. I'm not suggesting risk it all or throw the rest away, especially if you are pursuing something in the realms of creativity.
Another quote to end this blog post:
"This is a world, not a womb. You can look after yourself in this world while looking after your creativity at the same time — just as people have done for ages."
From the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
